If you enjoy the prayer life of the Church and enjoy spending time in the house of the Lord and have some ability with audio/visual technology, filming…. consider volunteering to make this happen for your fellow parishioners (and others who tune in regularly)

DUTY: stream Rosary and Divine Liturgy on Sundays; [other services vary depending on feast days and other celebrations. The number of times will depend on number of members in this Livestreaming team.

Cantors & Choir

Our Choir (1930s to Present)

The choir at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish has always played an important role in the history of the church.

In the early days of the parish, Cantors or Дяки, brought their knowledge of liturgical music from Ukraine, and sang the responses during Divine Liturgy. Subsequently, in 1937, a church choir was organized, under the leadership of Father Stefan Semczuk.

Over the years, the choir has had numerous talented conductors. Most notably, George Hnatiuk. Under his direction, the choir grew and, in its prime, numbered over 50 singers. In 1965, the choir participated in a concert in honour of Cardinal Joseph Slipyj. In 1980, the Ukrainian Millennium Choir of Winnipeg was formed under his baton, comprised of members of choirs from various Ukrainian churches. In 1988, the Millennium Choir traveled to Rome, as part of the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of Christianity in Ukraine.

During the next number of years, the church choir was conducted by Sister Michaela SSJ, and then by Bohdan Zaporozan.

Presently, the choir has approximately 20 members, ranging in age from late teens to those in their senior years. Our parish is very proud of and most fortunate to have a young conductor, Simeon Rusnak. Simeon is a life-long member of the parish, he is fluent in Ukrainian and is a graduate from the Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba. He is also the assistant conductor of Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus.

Our church choir is always looking for new singers. Ukrainians have a passion for singing and we would welcome those who can sing to come up to the choir loft Sunday mornings and join us in praising God.

We presently are blessed to have three lead singers; Simeon Rusnak as well as Alex Hryndzio (on leave) and Andriy Bobelyak. However, all who wish to join the singing group are encouraged to come right to the Cantors’ Krylos in front and help with the singing!

Epistle Readers

This group is open to parishioners who would like to enhance the Divine Liturgy by reading the Epistle. Several people have been volunteering - YOU CAN TOO! Qualifications - to read (PROCLAIM) the Word of God clearly in a manner that all parishioners can hear and understand the text.
